5 FAQs About Invisalign®

Invisalign Georgetown, MA

Invisalign® is a great teeth-straightening option for individuals looking to address crooked, crowded, and protruding teeth. Invisalign® has been around for almost 20 years, however, they are still considered to be new since metal braces are the most traditional method used for teeth straightening. Because they are not as familiar as braces, some individuals are curious about what the Invisalign® treatment process entails. Ready to find out more?

5 Common questions about Invisalign®

Outlined below are a few frequently asked questions and answers about Invisalign. This information can be helpful when preparing to undergo teeth-straightening treatment form a general dentist.

1. How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign works by straightening the teeth all at once, instead of individually such as with braces. Dentists will provide the patients with an individual tray for the top or bottom arch, or both. The trays are clear and removable and must be worn for 22 hours a day to ensure maximum results.

2. How long does treatment last?

Treatment with Invisalign can last anywhere from six months to a year, depending on the patient's needs, goals, and preferences. In some situations, treatment may extend to a year and a half or two years. The timeline will be identified at the start of the treatment process.

3. Is there any special oral care required?

Invisalign does require patients to practice good oral hygiene every day, however, there is no specific care plan. Regular brushing and flossing should be done, as well as rinsing. The trays can cause bacterial build-up, which can result in bad breath, thus requiring patients to use a salt-water rinse or mouthwash regularly.

The trays themselves should be also rinsed on a daily basis to avoid bacteria, odors, and build-up.

4. Are dental appointments required frequently?

Yes and no. Individuals undergoing Invisalign treatment will see the dentist every six to eight weeks for check-ins. Additionally, when undergoing Invisalign from a general dentist, routine cleanings can be done too, which may be done every three months. In some cases, patients will receive all of their trays at the start of treatment, thus reducing the number of appointments required.

5. How quickly are the results noticeable?

Results from Invisalign are typically noticeable within a few months of treatment. For the most part, individuals wear Invisalign for a year or so, but around three to four months, the teeth will start to noticeably shift. However, it is important to remember that each patient is different, meaning the results will vary. Those that have very minor imperfections may not see results until the end of their treatment, whereas those with moderate problems may notice results more quickly.
